What was the General Artemas Ward House?
General Artemas Ward house is a historic house in which General Artemas Ward lived. The house is at 786 Main Street in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He was an American General in the American Revolution. His father Nahum built the house in 1727. The general had enlarged it in 1785. It was again enlarged by the general’s son Thomas. Most of the Ward family lived there. The home is now operated by Harvard as a museum. The barn is actually 3 buildings in 1 and it has 7 floors. There were many rooms in the house. There were no bathrooms. They used chamber pots that were in the rooms instead of bathrooms. There were many fireplaces in the kitchen,the second kitchen,and the parlor. There were two kitchens in the house. The house was actually 2 houses in 1. Kids didn't go to school that much because the boys had to work with the dad on the farm and the girls had to cook with the mother. George Washington was the commander in chief in the American Revolution and he visited the Ward house.
