Prospect Park Last weekend I visited Prospect Park for the first time. For so long I have been driving past it without even knowing what it was. Prospect Park is popular for biking, dog walking and even strolling. Prospect Park is located in the heart of Shrewsbury. It is mainly for dogs because there are not many people so they can run around without a leash. When I went to Prospect Park I saw many dogs with their owners walking on the trails and my mom was REALLY scared. In Prospect Park there are six trails: 1. Juniper Trail (.1 mile) 2. Merriam Trail 3. Meeting House Hill Trail (.5 mile) 4. Berry Hill Trail (.5 mile) 5. Whittall Trail (.5 mile) 6. Pine Grove Trail I got a chance to see all of them. The history of Prospect Park is very interesting because, it used to be a mansion and then it became a hospital and finally it became a park. They still have the pergola that belonged to the mansion’s garden in 1912. The family that lived there was called the Whittall family. The mansion was built on a hill so you can see Lake Quinsigamond and Mount Wachusett. Since the garden was open to the community lots of people came to see their Lilacs bloom. During 1922 vice-president Calvin Coolidge visited Juniper Hall. After Mr. Whittall died his wife, Mrs. Whittall wanted that property to become a Masonic Hospital. In Prospect Park, if you keep walking up the hill you'll see two water tanks that provide for all of Shrewsbury. From there if you take a right and keep going you'll see a tiny clearing on your right which you can walk through to see the pergola that belonged to the mansion at more than 100 years ago. Unfortunately some people did not appreciate the pergola and tried to "ruin" it by putting graffiti on it. When I went to Prospect Park I saw many things. First of all it was a long walk up to the water tanks, which was a great workout and the trails had many, many flowers and plants that u can take pictures with, but please don't pull them out. When I saw the pergola i really liked it, especially because it was surrounded by a nice garden. The Friends of Prospect Park manage Prospect Park and they are doing are great job. My experience of Prospect Park was great, I hope I convinced you to go there yourself! ☻☻☻ |
